Railway Budget 2009 10 - Rail Budget























New Delhi :Union Minister for Railways Lalu Prasad presented the Interim Railway Budget for the first four months of the financial year 2009-2010 in Parliament on Friday.

Lalu has made efforts to take the interests of the common man into consideration while taking decisions over the interim Railway Budget 2009-10.

Indian Railways is the largest and busiest rail network in Asia. Over 11,000 trains run across the nation everyday out of those nearly 7,000 are passenger trains. Every day 1.8 crore passengers use India Railway. Railways has earned more than Rs 70,000 crores as revenue in 2008.

Presenting the interim Railway Budget, Lalu said the Railway has cash surplus at Rs 90,000 crore and those surplus has raised in last five years. Railways has invested Rs 36, 773 crore in 2008-09 and more to invest in next five years, said Lalu. Railway to start 43 new trains next year.

Here are the highlights of Railway Budget 2009:

• Railways to start 43 new trains in FY '10
• 2 per cut in all train fares,
• Fares of AC and mail express cut by 2 per cent,
• 4 call centers to be set up for railway inquiry,
• 5 lakh people use rail internet facilities,
• passengers grow is up 14%,
• Feasibility study for bullet trains underway (6 bullet trains - Delhip-Patna route),
• Freight earning up 19 % till September last year,
• Freight revenues for next financial year seen at 59,060 crore,
• Will invest Rs 2.30 lakh crore in 11th Five Year Plan,
• To spend Rs 37,900 crore in FY '10,
• Expected freight revenue in '09: Rs 59,060 cr,
• Freight traffic went up 9% last year,
• Turnaround without burden on public,
• To introduce high-capacity wagons,
• Railway fright rates remain unchanged,
• Kolkata metro expansion plans cleared,
• 8 per cent freight growth in past 5 years,
• Wagon production to be rose to15000 from 6600 per year,
• Steps to have railway connectivity to Kashmir initiated,
• Passenger trains to have 22 per cent more capacity,
• Bhubaneshwar-New Delhi Rajdhani becomes four days a week,
• Mumbai-Bikaner superfast bi-weekly,
• Nizamuddin-Bangalore Rajdhani tri-weekly,
